Reiki is a Japanese energy-healing modality developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century. The word itself, composed of *rei* (universal) and *ki* (life-force energy), points to the simple idea at its heart: a subtle, intelligent energy flows through everything alive, and when that flow is obstructed, we experience dis-ease.
During a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly above or on the body at specific points, often aligned with the chakras, channelling energy to clear blockages and invite the body back into its natural state of balance. You remain fully clothed and deeply at rest throughout.
Reiki is used around the world as complementary care, in hospitals, hospices, cancer support centres, and healing retreats. It has been shown to ease stress, grief, pain, and recovery from illness. It is not, however, a cure; it works alongside medical treatment, never instead of it.
